Gum recession is the process in which the tissue that surrounds the teeth migrates away from a tooth, exposing the tooth’s root. This can cause damage to supporting bone and cause tooth sensitivity. When a patient develops recession of the gums, it is important to have it examined in order to determine the best treatment options to correct the problem and/or to treat the cause of the problem to prevent further recession.
Gum recession is a common dental problem and often goes unnoticed because it is a gradual process. However, over time, an exposed tooth root can not only affect the appearance of the tooth, making it look longer in size but can cause tooth sensitivity, especially when eating cold or hot foods. Eventually, gum recession, if not treated, can cause tooth loss by affecting the underlying bone. To repair the damage and prevent further dental problems, a gum tissue graft may be needed.
Gum Tissue Grafting is a surgical procedure used to rebuild and regenerate gum tissue to cover exposed root surfaces and thicken gum tissue in areas affected by gum recession. In modern dentistry, this treatment has become a very common and simple in-office procedure.
